Driving In My Car: Finding the Car of Your Dreams

What you should know about raising the base of your car

Your car's ground clearance is an important factor considering the safety of the parts located near its base. Typically, the ground clearance varies according to different manufacturers. Some cars are manufactured with a good clearance such that you do not need to raise them for the safety of the delicate parts at the car's base. If done well, raising the car's base benefit you by reducing the number of times you will have to repair or replace the frequently damaged parts. If you are looking to increase your car's ground clearance, here are a few things you should know:

What determines the car's ground clearance?

Car manufacturer companies are located in different parts of the world. They make cars according to the roads and dimensions in their regions although most of them export the cars to different countries globally. Therefore, the car you buy may not be compatible with the conditions that the manufacturers had in mind. This elevates the risk of damage to parts such as the exhaust pipe, gearbox plate, and the fuel tank.

What do they change when raising the car?

When raising the car, changes are made using accessories called spacers. The spacers are fitted in a way that they alter the suspension of the car by increasing the distance between the wheel and the shock absorber of the car. The size of the spacer used to change the car's suspension depends on how much raise you desire.

Your mechanics can use aluminium or rubber spaces. Preferably, aluminium should be used because it does not wear off when used in the suspension system, unlike rubber. It is worth the additional cost you will incur instead of buying cheaper rubber spacers and having to replace them often. Moreover, the shape of the spacers used should be compatible with the shape of the car's mounting of the shock absorbers. For instance, if the mounting is triangular, then the spacers should also be triangular. They should not use circular ones in such a case. This will prevent compatibility problems between the shock absorbers and the spacers.

What new accessories might you need?

Depending on the raise you want, you will have to replace the shock absorbers and the spring coils in the car's suspension. If the shock absorbers cannot fit the new height of the car, you will have to buy longer ones. In addition, you will also have to change the spring if the spacers force it to stretch too wide.
